Apparent competition in biology refers to the indirect interaction between two species that share a common predator, leading to a reduction in their population sizes. The presence of one species reduces the abundance of the shared predator, which then increases the abundance of the other species, leading to increased competition for limited resources. The indirect interaction between the two species is referred to as "apparent" because the competition is not directly between the two species, but rather between each species and the shared predator.
